One shocking day, Kelly received the news that Tim was in a horrific car accident. He was on life support at the hospital. Kelly was devastated to hear that Tim’s father, Mike was to make the decision to take him off life support. He couldn’t do it. And so, Tim remained in a comma. The doctors finally convinced Mike that Tim would never be the same if he survived. Mike told the doctors to do what they had to do and Tim passed into Eternity.
Mike could not make peace with the accident or his son’s death. Once a thriving man in his community and his church he sunk into a very deep depression. He no longer could volunteer to drive people to the hospital that needed assistance as he once had. He no longer went to church. He even stopped going to work. Mike’s life spiraled deeper and deeper into despair.
One day, Mike received a call. Someone was desperate for a ride to the hospital and needed his assistance. At first he refused. Finally convinced that no one was available to help someone in need, he reluctantly said he would volunteer. He found himself pulling up to the hospital where his son had taken his last breath. With a heavy heart, he helped the person out of his car and led them into the hospital. He was told he had to take the patient to the second floor. His heart sank. This is where he said his final goodbye to Tim. As the elevator opened grief almost over took him. He went to the nurse’s station where a nurse led him to the very room that Tim had passed. Overcome with sorrow he started to run from the room. A woman gripped his arm and Tim abruptly turned to face her. She said: “Are you Mike Smith? And was Tim Smith your son?” Mike stumbled and replied, “Yes.” The woman spoke: “I have a message for you.” Mike wanted to run from the room. He glanced at the young woman that lay in the very bed where his son had died. “My daughter had a near death experience last night. My daughter said she went to a place that was very peaceful with rows of people in white robes; it was so beautiful she didn’t want to leave. She said that she met your son. Tim told her to tell you that you must let him go.” Mike’s body shook as he sobbed from the news he received. From that moment on the depression that so deeply over took him began to lift.
Years had passed and Kelly found herself in a very difficult marriage. She wondered how she had gotten so far to be in this place of despair. One night as she lay in bed she dreamed of Tim. In her dream they sat side by side as they so often did in their younger years. He turned to her and said, “Kelly, I know you are in a very difficult place right now. But things will get better. Have hope.”
I hope this story of Tim also brings you encouragement and hope. Some of the names of this story have been changed for privacy, but the story told from a close family friend is true.
